Hello, I’ve been dabbling with Gravit for a while now, and I’m really loving it so far! However, since I’m more of an illustrator rather than a designer, there are some features that have been lacking for me, so thought I’d make a feature-request if the developers would like to insert into it. If this is not the direction you’d like Gravit Designer to go in, then it’s perfectly understandable and you can feel free to ignore my feature request.
About 70% of my work involves using a graphic tablet, like Wacom, so trying to make the interface a bit more tablet-friendly can go a really long way. Gravit currently already allows me to move around the canvas with middle-click, and that’s pretty awesome, but it would also be pretty nice to be able to both zoom-in AND zoom-out quickly and conveniently with it (like how Krita uses Ctrl + Middle Click and moving cursor up and down for zooming in and out), rotating the canvas (same usage in Krita as the zoom, except this time using Shift instead of Ctrl), and possibly a Mirror feature that temporarily views the canvas in a horizontally flipped view but won’t export that way (simple M button suffices here). Of course, there’s no need to follow Krita’s conventions; I’m happy to adapt to whichever conventions the programmers choose.
The other more important Tablet-specific features I’d like to see are as follows:
1. Pressure-Sensitive Drawing - The ability to use my tablet’s pressure-sensitivity to alter the width of the stroke on-the-fly as I draw. This can be extremely useful and can save me a lot of time when illustrating. Which also brings me to…
2. Line-Width Tools - The ability to manually edit width at certain points where I may have made a mistake, or perhaps move certain points with width data where I’d ideally like thin or thick lines.
3. Auto-Fill Tools (Optional) - The ability to fill within / between disconnected paths that are still, at least, overlapping or pretty close to each other. I understand this is going to be pretty difficult to program, as not even Inkscape has managed to do it effectively (or as effectively as one may like compared to apps like Affinity), so it’s okay to work around this until we can perfect it. But what WOULD be pretty cool is if we also had…
4. Gap-Closing Tool - We already have a knife-tool to cut paths into two, so a great tool to complement it would be one that quickly joins two paths at their ends quickly with the flick of the stylus. This would allow illustrators to save a lot of time by just drawing what they need then closing the gaps and using the fill option from the right-hand panel.
That said, I also understand that Gravit’s biggest strength is its simplicity, so it may be pretty unfair to request these features directly into its workflow – but I think we could find a way to do that without sacrificing what already makes Gravity pretty cool. For example (and you don’t have to follow this exactly, it’s just an idea), the Width-Tools could be integrated directly into the Freehand Tool where the width-adjustments could just be one of the Effects, but one that you can alter (adding / deleting width-points, changing width attribute) directly from the canvas. Meanwhile the gap-closing tool can just be added right besides the Knife tool (I’m tempted to refer to it as the “Glue Tool”).
Please do consider this feature request! Gravit would became quite an integral part of my workflow if these features end up being added. I really appreciate everything you guys are doing. Thank you!
