I’m a recent convert To Gravit Designer and this is my first post on the forums
Is it just me or are others having the problem on the forums in the last few days that none of the images are displaying within the posts?
Below are my thoughts, experiences & some questions and yes there are inevitably some feature requests which I will post in that forum
I have literally spent many years looking for an ideal replacement for Adobe Fireworks, I have been stuck on the CS6 version for a very long time, but I felt Fireworks was so intuitive to use (and been using it since the very first Macromedia version) it was always my go-to app for vector artwork, I now want that solution to be GD
I discovered GD in its very early days and I must admit I liked it but it was missing much of what I needed. A few weeks ago I looked at it again (after having fireworks crash so often with the huge complex vectors I was working on was getting on my last nerve!). I must admit I was VERY impressed with the improvements you have made, so much so I tried the free version for a few days then purchased the Pro version
Fills & Borders
I really like the fact you can layer multiple fills and borders on top of each other. I have only scratched the surface with this so far but I’m sure you can create some interesting effects
I would love to see more examples of what other users have created with GD, I have looked at the Blog
I really like how you have implemented gradients, at first I was missing anything to tell me the position of a colour stop, e.g. 0, 50, 100. But being able to see the position of the colour stop on the actual object is a really nice touch
Do you have any plans to enhance the properties of the gradient so you can type in a numeric value for the position of the colour stops?
Stability seems really good, I have only managed to get GD to crash a couple of times and this was with a vector image with 1000’s and 1000’s of paths and I noticed GD was using about 3.5Gb of memory when it just stopped responding. Overall I’m very impressed
Finally, I see quite a few people have migrated from Fireworks, I have read many forum posts about importing Fireworks PNG files. Yes, I understand you won’t write an import routine for them (bloody shame) and the advised process is to export in SVG from Fireworks then import into GD. I have some fairly complex work that just won’t export as SVG, it just fails every time
When the export does work I have found I get better results bringing this into Illustrator CS6 and then saving again as an SVG
When the export fails, I have had some success saving as an Illustrator 8 file in Fireworks. Bringing this into Illustrator CS6 and saving as a .AI or .SVG file to bring into GD
If all else fails I’m having to export parts of a design then re-do the rest in GD from scratch, annoying to say the least
What process do others use? Do you also have the problems with the Fireworks SVG export not working? How do you get around this?
I have read a lot of the forums and most of the user guide. There are some wonderful ideas here and some very helpful people providing great examples of how to achieve things, I hope in time I might be able to help others too
